Counseling has changed my life and shaped me into the person I am today. My main career goal is to help others through clinical mental health counseling. I am in a graduate program for clinical mental health counseling. I selected this specific program because I believe that mental health counseling is such an important public health service. I am currently working in the addiction field at a local treatment facility for recovering addicts and alcoholics. I believe that this type of work is extremely important to today's society. You will hear about the opioid epidemic spreading across America, and I feel if I can make a small contribution is saving someone's life through counseling, that is what makes me most passionate about my future career as a substance abuse counselor.
I am grateful to say that I have been in recovery from substance use disorder since August 13, 2013. I took a very wrong turn early on in my life, and I am very grateful to have gotten sober so early in my life. Through the help of counselors, I have been able to achieve long term sobriety. My dream is to help others that are in the same shoes as I was walking around in for so long. I am living proof that recovery works, and you can achieve any dream that you set your mind to. I never thought I would be in graduate school working for a career that I am truly passionate about.
In my undergraduate career, I had the distinct honor and privilege to be a part of a collegiate recovery community at Texas Tech University. Watching the counselors at this community center inspire and encourage recovering drug addicts and alcoholics, including myself, to pursue higher education was very inspirational to me. Most drug addicts and alcoholics feel as though they cannot amount to anything because they threw away their life and reputation to lead a certain lifestyle. It was statistically proven that the students of the recovery community on campus had an above-average grade point average.
