Write an essay where you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to become a teacher.

What do I want to do for the rest of my life?,” “What is going to make me happy?” and “What is going to pay well?” I job shadowed anything that I thought could be a remote possibility, a dental hygienist, an interior designer, a sonographer; you name it, I thought about it. But nothing was giving me satisfying answers to my three big questions. Before I knew it, I had taken three semesters of classes and completed all my core credits, which left me with nowhere to go, so I took a semester off. I felt so lost during this point in my life; I had been trying so hard to find something that was right for me, and time and time again I was coming up empty handed. About halfway through what should’ve been my fourth semester, I had a very eye-opening moment in my life. It was a three-hour conversation I had with someone during a car ride that made me realize what I wanted to major in. Funny how something I struggled with for years all of the sudden came together in a few hours. I realized something that should have been obvious to me before; I realized I wanted to be a teacher, an elementary teacher. Once I thought about it, it made perfect sense to me. I love working with kids, because they are the future. I believe they need to be shaped to have confidence from an early age, and I think I am just the person to do that. I think being there to tell young, impressionable minds that they matter and that they are important is detrimental, even if it only happens for less than a year in my classroom. This car ride was the answer to my questions and even though I realize it isn’t going to make as much money as I would’ve hoped, I know that this is what will make me happy. I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders when I made this decision, and ever since then I have been so excited to start teaching. I absolutely cannot wait to see all the kids that come through my class and watch them grow and go onto to do amazing things, that is why I want to be a teacher.
