Write an essay where you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to become a teacher.

When I was a kid, I felt like I couldn’t succeed academically. I felt stupid and had a lot of problems at home that affected my ability to concentrate on school work. The moment I realized I wanted to be a teacher was when I was a senior in high school. I was taking an AP psychology class because I was really interested in human behavior and wanted to understand why people did what they did. I wanted to know why people picked on me in school, and I wanted to understand why many members of my family were drug addicts. When I took this psychology class, my teacher was so supportive of me. She personally congratulated me whenever I received good grades which is the kind of positive reinforcement I never recurved at home.. she made me want to try as hard as I could because I wanted to make her proud of me. The smallest amount of positive attention helped me to work harder than I ever had before. Before her, if I did well on something, that accomplishment wasn’t acknowledged I felt like I did not have the energy to try for no reason. I could not go to my dream school in New York because it was too expensive so I lost all the motivation to get good grades. My AP Psychology teacher gave me my motivation back, and not only for her class. I tried harder in all of my classes and ended up getting honor role for the first time, and I felt proud of myself, which was better than anyone else being proud of me. I had never felt proud of myself before; I had never felt like I accomplished something. Now, I was accepted to Drexel University and will be attending in Fall if 2019, and I could not be more proud of myself. I am going to school for Elementary Education because I want to be a positive influence to children. I want to tell them I’m proud of them when they succeed so that they learn to be motivated to keep succeeding throughout life. I don’t think I would be on the path I am today without the support of my AP Psychology teacher.
