Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
At the time, I was unaware of how severe my family members were affected by disease. After receiving the news that my mother had Breast Cancer, my mother underwent a double mastectomy and six months of chemotherapy. She was essentially immobilized, and every breath of air was a blessing to her. As she fought for her life, I took over the role of a mother figure, helping my mother with medications while assisting my brother who has Cystic Fibrosis, an inherited life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive tissue. I would help my brother with his daily routine of breathing treatments and help him with the vest that keeps his lungs clear and functioning. Caring for my family at their most vulnerable moments and seeing some sights of relief after I helped them made me realize that helping those in need was something that was so important to me.
Throughout my entire childhood, I have been forced out of my comfort zone through experiences with my family and have learned how to have confidence in my abilities as not only an aspiring nurse, but as an individual that sets high standards for herself and works diligently to exceed these expectations. It was because of this opportunity that I have been shaped into a courageous opportunity seeker that always learns from my mistakes and experiences. I was forced to mature quicker than all of my friends, but I am forever grateful for this experience that brought my family closer together while teaching me what I am passionate about.
