Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My biggest motivator for becoming a nurse is my strength. My first experience with a patient with a feeding tube was not a strong moment I am proud of. This particular patient was an elderly woman who had a nasogastric tube (NG) placed due to a procedure she had. She was unable to receive all nutrition and vitamins she needed. She could still consume a regular diet, and yet she was miserable due to her appearance. Instead of looking at her as a person, all I could think was, “How could she be so upset? She could have it so much worse than this; compared to others she has it easy. She should be grateful that we have come so far in medical technology that we can even offer this treatment.” I wasn’t looking at her feelings at all; instead I was ignorant to her emotional health and was only looking at the scientific portion of nursing her care required. Oh, how my eyes opened when I myself needed to have my first feeding tube, I completely changed my views. Only minutes after arriving back to my treatment room, my sister called using facetime. That was the first time since my procedure that I saw her, and my worst fear had come to life, now enter weakness. All I could see myself as was pathetic, and heartbroken. For a short time, all I could think about was, “When can I get this horrible thing out of me? Why did this have to happen to me?.” I wanted to give up; I was going back and forth between having an abortion or continuing with things as they are. After being the patient and going threw this process, I feel my emotional strength has grown; and I want to share my experience with other patients to help and care for them in a way others cant, I want to make them feel alive again. My biggest motivator for becoming a nurse is my strength. I want to show others that nursing is not just science; it’s not just following doctor’s orders, nursing is giving our patients the physical and emotional needs to remind and help them feel human.
