Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to help others. A large part of that has been volunteering. I have been a part of my school’s Interact Club (service club) for all four years of high school, and it allowed me to serve my local and international community. I held an officer position as early as sophomore year as the club’s treasurer and went on to serve as the club’s president and secretary in later years. To me, the Interact motto “Service Above Self” means putting others' needs before your own. It means serving others because every person deserves the right to thrive. Service has helped me grow and taught me that everyone is at a different point in their life and that there is always a way to help. I hope to use this passion towards my dream of becoming a nurse.
Furthermore, my father is from Suriname, a third world country in South America, where I have witnessed first-hand the disparities in their quality of life. I want to learn how I can give back to my family and people in need worldwide. There is so much that we can learn beyond the borders of our country and I look forward to helping people in places beyond the US. The healthcare systems in foreign countries do not have the same luxuries that we do so I hope that I will be able to use my skills as a nurse to work with people internationally to improve their healthcare system or even just offer my skills to those who need them the most.
