Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
In the summer of 2017, I had responsibilities that most fifteen year olds would not experience. My grandma who was living with us had become very ill to the point where she couldn’t take care of herself anymore. She already needed help with certain things because she was blind and diabetic, however she always knew her way around the house and where all her things were placed. After this sickness took over her body, her whole world changed. Once we realized things could no longer be the same, I was the one that took care of her on a daily basis. Living in a single parent household with my mother working two jobs, it was difficult for my mom to take care of her as much as she liked. She taught me how to give my grandmother insulin, bathe her, feed her, etc. My grandmother always told me that my presence with her for that time period made it somewhat easier being sick. At first, I thought my summer would be boring because I wouldn’t get to see my friends as much as I would like to. However, that was a summer I will always be grateful for. I didn’t realize that my time was running out with her. Now, I am grateful for that time I spent with her was substantial, and it will always have a place in my heart. I just can’t wait for my grandmother to look down from above and see me in the future where she always said I would be, caring for others.
These are only some of the activities that have persuaded me to take this path in life and I feel as if they have definitely impacted me in a positive way. My desire to help others makes me certain that this would be a job that I would be fulfilled with doing for the rest of my life.
