When I was 13, I had an incredible opportunity to move in with my father. One uneventful day not long after, he started complaining of stomach pains. Stomach pains turned into weight loss, anorexia and eventually, the loss of motor function.
Unfortunately for my father, over the next 17 years he would continue to have a plethora of health issues but our bond was never stronger. One event even required me to quit my job and become his primary caregiver for six months. This same stint also required hospice (which he graduated from!). I watched these nurses in awe and even a bit of excitement. I could and would be in their shoes one day.
October 19th, 2019. Exactly one month before my father’s 68th birthday; I walked into his hospital room after speaking with his nurse. She stated to me he was in a bit of a foul mood but continuing to heal. As I walked in my father looked at me and said, “I’m done.” And that was it, I understood. He had been put through this pain for the last 17 years and this time
