Unfortunately for my father, over the next 17 years he would continue to have a plethora of health issues but our bond was never stronger. One event even required me to quit my job and become his primary caregiver for six months. This same stint also required hospice (which he graduated from!). He was determined to and did heal from all these health scares. The cat with 9 lives as we lovingly called him.
This brings me to four months ago. I drove to my father’s house for my 31st birthday and enjoyed a great evening with him and my husband. The next morning my father started complaining of stomach pain. As I was leaving, my father was in too much pain to get out of bed. I said goodbye to him at his bedside and walked out to my car. As I started to pull from his driveway, however, I saw my father walk out. “I thought your stomach hurt too much to come out?” I asked. My father responded, “It does but you’re worth it.”
Three weeks later I sat on my father’s hospital as he was recovering from emergency bowel surgery. Unexpected necrosis took 2 feet of his intestines. Over those three weeks, I spent countless hours speaking in depth to the ICU nurses (I had been accepted into the SRJC nursing program) and they helped me understand what was happening on a medical end. I watched these nurses in awe and even a bit of excitement. I could and would be in their shoes one day.
October 19th, 2019. Exactly one month before my father’s 68th birthday; I walked into his hospital room after speaking with his nurse. She stated to me he was in a bit of a foul mood but continuing to heal. As I walked in my father looked at me and said, “I’m done.” And that was it, I understood. He had been put through this pain for the last 17 years and this time
