Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My name is Shelly Nonnenberg, and I aspire to be a nurse. I have had the dream of being a nurse since I shadowed a nurse in the mom and baby unit in a hospital. After seeing these selfless nurses take care of their patients with compassion, understanding, and empathy, I knew it was my passion. My biggest motivating factor to be a nurse is not only to be able to treat patients in need, but show them that they are not just another patient, they are cared for and their well-being is important. My biggest motivating factor is not only to save lives, but with kindness. I want to be a nurse because I know how scary it is to be in that hospital bed, I know how it feels to be in pain, and I know it can be scary to be putting your life in someone else's hands. I want to try my best to make the pain go away, but I want to make patients comfortable, let them know I am there for them, and that I will do everything in my power to make their situations the best that they can be. I respect all careers in nursing, but I aspire to be a post-partum nurse. Watching my shadowing nurse care for mothers in their most fragile state, helping them adjust to motherhood, helping new moms learn how to breastfeed, swaddle, even learn how to use the restroom after giving birth, I want to do that for the rest of my life. I want to make a difference in my patients lives, and there is nothing that will bring me more joy then to be able to witness a mother learn to care for her baby. Post-partum depression and baby blues are an important aspect of a new mother’s life after giving birth, and I want to show a new mother experiencing those feelings kindness and compassion, and let her know that everything will be okay. I think education in nursing is so important, and I want to be able to educate new parents on caring for their baby and answer any questions they have. In conclusion, I want to be a nurse not only to save lives, but to be able to care for and emotionally support those who need it most.
