Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My name is Oo Meh. I am an undergraduate student majoring in nursing at Western Kentucky University because I want to become a nurse practitioner. My passion for becoming a nurse practitioner all started when I was in Karenni Refugee Camp 1 in western Thailand where I was born and raised. I want to become a nurse practitioner because of the experiences that I had and I want to give back my time to people who really need help. In the camp, I lost a lot of my relatives because of the lack of qualified healthcare workers, the lack of medicines, the lack of technologies, and more. Living in the camp was not easy. We got sicknesses and illnesses easily in the camp from the unclean water, the unclean food, and the flies and bugs. We lived in a jungle where there were a lot of trees, so there were a lot of insects.
One of my relatives got an illness, so my dad and uncles took him to the makeshift clinic. Since there were no nurses or doctors present to treat him, he died. In the camp, we did not have a hospital and there were only three doctors and they did not have a degree.
My desire to become a nurse practitioner is very high and I am motivated to achieve this dream. All of my experiences have helped me to never give up and to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles are in my way. Being able to go to college and become a nurse practitioner will help me prepare to give back and help others. One day, I would like to go back to the Karenni Refugee Camp and help out all of the thousands of refugees there so that they do not have to suffer like my family and I did.
