Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been interested and excited about a career in
nursing. I think part of my interest begins with my childhood and the miraculous story of my
birth. You see, I am a twin and was born six weeks prematurely. Our delivery was quite a
traumatic experience. My sister Erin was born first through a relatively smooth vaginal delivery;
I on the other hand wanted to make a grand entrance. Immediately after my sister was delivered, the doctor discovered there was something severely wrong. It turns out that I was breech and high in the womb. Despite physical attempts to manipulate me, it was decided that the urgency of the situation necessitated a quick delivery and my mother was rushed off to surgery. I was born 24 minutes later by emergency Cesarean Section. We were miracle babies. Erin was 3 lbs and 15 oz and I was 2 lbs and 14 oz. After a two week and one month respective stay in the Neonatal ICU we were allowed to go home. On numerous occasions, I have been told how instrumental the nurses were in helping my family get through this intense period. I believe this is where my desire to be a nurse originates. A career in nursing is exciting to me because the possibilities are endless. There are so many career options and specialties to explore. The diverse nature of nursing is such that it continually promotes opportunities for professional development. This allows for continued growth through new learning opportunities. The work of nursing appeals to me because it is very rewarding in that it will enable me to directly impact the health and lives of individuals within the community. My professional goals include completing my undergraduate degree. I plan on graduating from Oakwood University’s Nursing School with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. I have a strong desire to positively impact the health and well-being of women and children. More specifically, I plan to become a Labor and Delivery RN upon graduating.
