Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse, but it was not until my Nan became sick that I found my motivation to work towards such a fulfilling career. It was a Saturday night in October when my parents called to let me know they were taking my nan to the ER, not to worry, and that they would keep me updated. After not hearing anything back for a few hours I called my dad to see what was going on, he told me the doctors were still running tests, and he would call me back in the morning when he knew more. Three days and dozens of tests later we were told Nan had stage four liver disease. I do not remember how upset I was or if they told us how much time we would have, but I do know I wanted to spend as much time as I could right by her side, making sure she was happy and comfortable. Nan always enjoyed our weekly visit to the hair salon on Saturdays, however, when it became difficult for her to leave the house, I brought the salon to her and my beauty school rollers were finally put to good use. It was important to me that I kept her spirits high. On December 3rd, six weeks after the first ER visit, my mom called asking me to meet her at the hospital, Nan had a procedure earlier that day and there were complications, she was taken right to the Hospice Unit where we spent the next nine days. Over those nine days, I watched nurses work around the clock providing care to their patients and being a support system for the families during their toughest time. As I watched the hospice nurses care for Nan in her final days, I became more convinced that I too, would one day be the nurse providing comfort and empathy to patients and families in need. It is the selflessness, dedication, and understanding the needs of others that inspire me to work hard and gives me the drive to want to become a nurse.
