Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My desire to become a nurse was and still is inspired by a variety of events and new information I learn about this profession everyday. I was first inspired to pursue my nursing degree because of my passion to help others and make a change within my community. I knew early on I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others and I realized just how much nurses can impact lives when a nurse was responsible for saving my aunt's life. My aunt went into cardiac arrest in the spring of 2014. A nurse just so happened to be her first responder and played a vital role in saving her life, simply by doing what she was trained to do. She recognized that a complete stranger to her needed immediate medical attention and immediately sprung into action. It was that moment that inspired me to pursue my degree in nursing.
Since I've become a nursing student, I've also noticed disparities in the health profession towards people of color. According to the AMA Journal of Ethics, there is a gap between the evaluation and treatment of pain between people of Caucasian descent and those of African American and Hispanic descent. There is also a disparity between White and African American women in regards to maternal mortality as African American mothers are three times more likely to die from birth-related complications. These findings have only further increased my desire to enter the nursing field and make a difference for people of color who's health related problems are often overlooked or not taken seriously. I hope to bring my awareness and knowledge to this field and make a difference by advocating for all patients, no matter their background. All patients deserve healthcare providers who listen to them and take them seriously when they present with health concerns and I want to make a change towards progress in the right direction for not only people of color, but all patients in my community.
