Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My mother was six months pregnant with me and regularly told her doctor she was not being able to hold down any food. She felt this was not normal but was continuously told it was. My mother went to the hospital and went into the bathroom with the assistance of a nurse because she could not walk correctly on her own. That very same nurse saw that she had no control over her left foot. She immediately ordered a CAT scan which revealed a tumor the size of a golf ball in the cerebellum, growing with immense speed. The next day she was put under the knife to remove the hemangioblastoma which had doubled in size overnight.
Part of me believes that my mother’s pregnancy complications are the reason I want to become a nurse. Nurses must make decisions ‘under pressure, and the job does not get done without them. Nurses are the backbones to hospitals. I want to be a part of that backbone. I believe that I can make life or death decisions in a split second. For example, last summer I had a 3rd grade camper who came running out of the woods screaming because he had been stung over six times. My first instinct was to toss the kid in the water to give him some sort of relief and apply the sting relief pads I had in my backpack while waiting for assistance to arrive. Working as a counselor for five years has improved my quick-thinking skills and solidified my decision to become a nurse. I plan to graduate the University of New England with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I can’t say from there what I will do for sure, but I know right now I’m interested in working in the ER. My end goal in my nursing career is to be a nurse in the Navy.
