Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
I am a twin, which is a big part of who I am because it has taught me patience, love and how to get through tough situations. My sister and I were born at 31 weeks and were both preemies. My sister was found to have congenital heart disease and has needed multiple surgeries throughout her life. Being her sister has taught me so much about myself and about the healthcare field and is one of the biggest reasons that I want to become a nurse.
Pursuing a nursing degree is extremely important to me because one of my main goals in life is to help people. Being a nurse will help me achieve this goal. Also, the experience that I have had with nurses has been so positive that I want to become that light in someone’s life during a bad time. For example, when my sister had heart surgery in 2017, all of the nurses were so kind and reassuring to me and my family during what was a really difficult and worrisome time.
Not all nurses are good at what they do, especially at knowing how to communicate with people. When my grandfather was in a nursing home, he had some CNAs and nurses who didn’t have the necessary communication skills to deal with older people who can have bad days and tend to be grumpy. However, there were always some really great nurses that my grandfather gravitated towards. These nurses were the kindest and most hard-working, each having a great bedside manner and amazing communication skills. I want to be a nurse because I want to be like those nurses who enjoy what they do and who are really good at bringing care and comfort to others.
