Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
I received my first degree at Pennsylvania State University, obtaining a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. I continued to develop patience, compassion, wisdom, warmth and the knowledge to be able to contribute to the well-being of all people I interact with. I currently work as a Therapeutic Support Staff working on behavioral interventions and transferring skills to primary caregivers and teachers who interact with my clients. Through working in this position for the past few years, I have been able to learn so much from the clients as well as staff in the many supporting positions. Through multiple dialogues, I gained a great interest in nursing and for the past few years, I have been able to find information about nursing, have enlightening discussions with many nurses, and take time to consider if I am willing to study and work hard to pursue nursing. I would be able to provide the compassion and trust with patients as a nurse. I am eager to work in a well-communicative team for support and am excited to grow within the nursing field to continue to pursue more advanced degrees to further help patients. I will strive for a future where I can apply my psychology background and experience with knowledge in nursing to expand my capacity to care for all people. When the safety and well-being are compromised and people feel vulnerable, to be able to have the skills to provide for them compassion and safety is fulfilling and encourages me to work even harder for others. I’ve had experiences in many health care institutions where there is a presence of systemic discrimination. While there aren’t always actions that blatantly disregard human dignity, there seems to be a lack of training for hospital workers to help people with mental health disorders in crisis. I hope to lessen the gap of discrimination to provide compassionate and just treatment.
