Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I knew that I wanted to be a nurse. I wanted to be able to give back to my community. I want to be able to assist others who are going through a difficult time. My step-father was a physician and initially spurred my interest in medicine. With my experiences, first hand, I have decided to return to school and get a degree in Nursing.

To broaden my view on healthcare, I started working as a health educator with the Southwest Utah Public Health Department. I served the rural five southwest counties of Utah. I have had an amazing opportunity to educate patients and the public on a myriad of health concerns. At the Public Health Department my associations were primarily with rural and underserved populations. I witnessed first hand the challenges they face as access to quality and affordable healthcare is often limited. Every day I set out to bridge those gaps in my community. Whether it is explaining the risks associated with tobacco, or teaching new parents how to properly install their infant’s car seat, I have seen how proper education impacts the health and lives of those in my community.

Wanting to increase my community involvement in healthcare, I joined coalitions such as: The St. George Community Coalition, Washington City Active Transportation Committee, and Community Health Partnerships. My time serving in these coalitions opened my eyes to how much my local community needed advanced healthcare professionals who could care for the influx of patients. My experiences in these coalitions and at the health department provided a great perspective to me on the health care in my community.
I have developed a relationship with every patient that I have had. I have loved learning about them and learning from them. When I am a nurse, I hope to carry my relationship with my patients further. I will have the skill set and the ability to treat my patients from beginning to end of their ailment, educating them every step of the way.
