Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

What inspired me to pursue a nursing degree? The first reason I decided to pursue a nursing degree is to better the lives of my children. I worked in factories ever since I was about 26 years old. I had an accident at work that messed up my back in 2009. I was misdiagnosed for almost a year before I decided to get a second opinion. After that I continued to keep working in factories and on December 27, 2014 I went paralyzed from the waist down. Our lives were changed forever after that day. I was in the hospital for four days with no answers and sent home. The only reasoning we got was the doctor told my mother it was my depression and anxiety taking over my body. I had to get use to caring for my kids without walking. My depression set in to the point I didn’t want to get out of bed at all. Until I finally had enough and went to see spinal surgeon and found out that the slipped disc I had moved and pinched off my spinal cord. So he did a spinal fusion and fixed my back. I had to teach myself how to walk all over again and pretty much how to be a human again let alone a mother. From that day forward I vowed to myself and my three kids that I was going to teach them how to get back up and make something great out of a bad situation and to never let no one or anything get in the way of being the best you can be. I wanted to be a nurse so I can advocate for those patients that feel like they are being mistreated and misdiagnosed. I have been down that road and I know still to this day what it feels like for the doctor to look at you like you are making it all up. I know what it is like to have anyone in the medical filed not take you serious. Most of all I want to make a difference in not only the lives of my children, but the lives of my patients.
