Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

The Journey to becoming a nurse has been a very difficult journey. I have spent countless hours studying meeting and working in groups learning the material to become a nurse. We have all cried and laughed during the journey of nursing. At my time here at Lynchburg College, I have completed several nursing classes, general education classes, along with a job at Lynchburg General Hospital on the oncology unit as a Certified Nursing Assistant. During my clinical experience, I have had experience in many different medical-surgical units and specialty units. During my experiences, I have developed a passion for oncology nursing. Over the summer of 2018, I worked at Centra's Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia as a Student Nurse Extern on the oncology floor. During that summer I fell more in love with the oncology patients and unit. My plans after college, I plan on becoming an oncology nurse with certifications in chemotherapy and port access.
When I decided to become a nurse, it was not an easy decision. My grandfather, who passed away several years before I graduated high school, was my biggest aspiration to pursuing nursing. He had many different health problems, the main two being dementia and type 2 diabetes. His diabetes was so uncontrolled he had diabetic sores on his legs for several years. I watched my parents take care of him most of my childhood and neither of them had any medical experience. My grandmother also had a short battle with cancer when I was very young. I did not know what was going on and I did not know exactly what was going on until I was older. Through my grandparents, I have gained a passion for helping people and trying to make them feel better and give them a better quality of life because of their chronic illnesses.
