Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I always knew I had a passion for helping others. However, I was always at a loss of what direction I wanted to take that passion. I began my college career with a desire to become a dental hygienist because of how I remember my pediatric hygienists calming my fears every time I stepped into the dentist’s office to for a regular cleaning or to have a cavity filled. It wasn’t until I was 20-years-old and pregnant that I realized I may not want to clean teeth for the rest of my life.

When I went into labor just over seven years ago as a young, scared, single mother, it was the nurses who were able to ease my fears and make a painful 31-hour labor easier to endure. I had no partner there to encourage me or laugh with me or cry with me during hours and hours of excruciating pain. There were, however, numerous nurses in and out of my room throughout the night to rub my back, explain what was happening, and praise me as a I pushed my little linebacker out into this world.

It was after I had my son, I knew I wanted to be for someone else what these nurses were for me in the most important moment of my life. I want to encourage patients. I want to laugh with them to make them forget an uncomfortable moment, and I want to be empathetic toward them through the painful moments. But most of all, I want to care for patients when they need someone the most.
