Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Why do I want to become a nurse? My mother and grandmother are both nurses, so I thought of the traits that show while they’re working. I have always admired them for their vast knowledge, passion, and caring nature while observing them work. They are my major influences and inspire me to become a third-generation nurse. I have always wanted a career where I can devote my time and energy to helping others, but my mother and grandmother sparked the interest for me to work in the medical field.
For one week in both the summers of 2017 and 2018, I was hired as a camp counselor for an ADA camp called Camp Freedom. As a camp counselor, I was given a cabin of about 12 young girls that had Type 1 Diabetes. My duties and responsibilities included checking their blood glucose levels around the clock because of activities and meals, helping them cope with being away from home, and most importantly, to have fun with them! Being a camp counselor there was such a rewarding experience. The camp has such an extensive medical staff—each cabin has their own medical staff that they report blood glucose levels to directly so the campers get proper basal levels and insulin. Our cabin had a Nurse Practitioner who was so great with the campers, and I saw her as my mentor for the week.
As of the Fall 2019 semester, I will be a sophomore at Rutgers University—Camden pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. After that, I plan to go back to school so I can earn my degree to be a Nurse Practitioner, just like my mentor at Camp Freedom. I may not end up working with children affected by Type 1 Diabetes, but I still plan to treat patients with the same enthusiasm, compassion, and reassurance as I do with my campers at Camp Freedom. As a counselor there, I tapped into my true passion of helping others to live a life worth living—one that is lived to the fullest despite medical conditions!
