Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
It wasn't until my senior year that it suddenly became obvious to me. Growing up I have always had the responsibility of caring for others. Being the oldest of three in a divorced family meant I had to help out with my younger brother and sister. On top of that, my mother's medical condition meant she needed caring for too. After having a seizure while driving on the highway, breaking both legs, multiple ribs, sustaining a concussion and internal injuries, I had more responsibility than ever. I was seven at the time.
I always thought I got the short end of the stick in life. Like my childhood had been stripped away. I envied my friends, whose biggest worry it seemed was whether a boy liked them back. It wasn't until later that I realized how wrong I was. The experiences in my life have shaped me into a responsible, competent, caring, and kind young woman.
When becoming a nurse crossed my mind in the fall of my senior year, I realized how well this career would suit me. While the demanding course load would certainly be hard to tackle, I've learned that even under the most stressful conditions, I can succeed. While the job itself would be tedious, under-appreciated, and emotionally taxing at times, I have learned from caring for my family that it is well worth it in the end. Caring for others is who I am, and always will be.
I am eager to see where my career will take me. I am ready to be selfless in helping others, yet prioritize discovering where my passions lie in the nursing field. I am inspired by myself and what I have accomplished, and can't wait to see what I achieve in the future.
