Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

On December 1st, 2017, I had a miscarriage that shook my world. I lost a beautiful angel. While lying in the hospital, the doctor came in and shared his condolences with me and quickly shuffled away. The nurse promptly came in and began to perform her discharge teaching and noticed that I was breaking down inside. I couldn’t help it, and she knew. She took my hands and told me “It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to feel sad, but you will overcome this”. She gave me the biggest hug and wiped my tears away. She sat beside me and shared her past experiences, and in that moment of pain, I felt set free.
My name is Adaeze Bianca Idakwo, and I will be attending the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston for the RN to BSN program. Currently, I am attending Houston Community College in Houston to obtain my Associates Degree in Nursing.
My educational goals consist of acquiring my BSN and obtaining certifications as a lactation consultant, certified mental health nurse, as well as a certified emergency room nurse.
Long term, my aspirations include becoming a mental health nurse practitioner that specializes in women’s mental health—antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum as well as a nurse educator for high school students interested in the field of nursing. My goal is to educate and assist women with postpartum depression and other related psychological issues. These health issues can occur at any stage of pregnancy, and as a nurse, I have to ensure that each patient is adequately cared and assessed.
Being a certified mental health nurse allows me to successfully listen and apply the resilience needed to ensure a safe, positive environment for my patient. As a certified emergency room nurse, I will be able to use quick reasoning and judgment when helping patients experiencing a mental breakdown. Applying these specialties together will develop me to be a seasoned nurse in the world of women’s mental health.
