Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
We spent months in the hospital, befriending nurses, caring for my boyfriend, Jack, and finding comfort in the little things the hospital provided. After being placed on hospice care, Jack passed away at home. His family and I took over every aspect of his care.
After an experience like this, one would think I would not want to step foot into a hospital. I specifically remember Jack’s brother asking me “don’t you hate walking into hospitals?” I don’t. We spent months in the hospital, finding comfort and, strangely enough, a home.
The most critical part of making it a “home” included the nursing staff. Nurses have the ability to put a smile on the face of their patients and caregivers. In addition, nurses are the first to assess a patient's issues. Throughout this entire experience, I found that I not only have the skills and composure to accurately assess the situation, but also give feedback to nurses and doctors.
I dream of making a difference. Jack helped me realize I had the capacity to handle anything, and he has given me the opportunity to seek out something bigger than myself. I possess the ability to comfort families who are going through something that I struggled through, and I am empowered and excited to be a source of hope for them.
I unknowingly spent a year preparing to be a nurse. For me, a career in nursing would not simply be a job, but a personal investment.
