Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been taking care of someone. Whether it was the family pet, my friends, or my parents when rough times were wearing them down. I was inspired to pursue nursing because I love to study people and their cultures. We are all so complex with many layers and backgrounds, things that have shaped us to who we are today. We are not just physical beings, but spiritual as well. Nursing not only allows me to do what I love, but also take what I have learned and apply it to better someone’s experience when they are in their most vulnerable position. It is very scary and unearthing when you are having intense chest pain and have to look at your wife or children not knowing if you will make it to the next day. When they look around, I want to be the one who gives them the reassuring feeling that we are doing everything we can to help them. I have been in many rooms with family members who were nearing their time and feeling that there was little that I could do to make their descent more comfortable. It was a nurse who walked in and helped them laugh and smile with what little strength they had. Whatever language or culture they present themselves, it is a challenge and a joy to help people feel as comfortable as possible as they are away from family members and their homes. Nursing is not something everyone can do, but I feel called to do this work of love. I do feel nervous when I am around patients but that is only because I understand the responsibility and trust that accompanies my job and I take it very seriously. I am very grateful to those who pray for my success because they are the gasoline that has helped my fire continue to burn.
