Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Throughout my schooling, life has taken me on quite the journey. High school was a struggle for me socially. Just before starting high school, my parents made the decision to move from a middle-class neighborhood to an upper-class town. Throughout high school, I failed to connect with my peers. It could be assumed that I would grow to resent other people as a result of being ostracized. However, it had the opposite effect on me. My experience there sparked in me a desire to reach out and help others.
Although I was relieved when high school was over, going into college I was admittedly directionless. I am the first in my family to attend college. This presented a challenge as I was not prepared to succeed in the way I would have liked. My grades were average the first few semesters, but without a major I had no clear goal. Eventually my grades started to slip, and around then I took a break from school and started working.
While working in retail, I started to realize how I could help others. In small but significant ways I could go the extra mile for people. Working my way up the ranks, I found myself working in customer service. I still look back fondly on that position. Unfortunately, I received notice that I was laid off from work. At that point, I started looking into other careers. A career test online suggested several fields and I narrowed them down to careers that I felt I would do well in. Nursing stood out above all others.
I watched a documentary recently on Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre’s partnership in founding Beats Electronics called The Defiant Ones. In it, Jimmy Iovine said “Never stop being of service”. This quote really resonated with me and I have been striving to make it a reality. I am interested in the field of nursing because I want to be of service. My only regret is that I did not discover nursing sooner. Although I know it will not be easy, I am excited and dedicated to achieving success as a nurse so that I can be “of service”.
