Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My Grandma cried. My Cousin jumped for joy. My Aunt smiled and hugged me with excitement. While at a family reunion this past winter, I finally declared my major. I was going to be a Registered Nurse. Why did these three family members have such strong reactions you might ask? Because they are all RN's. I am a male wanting to be a nurse in a family of female nurses and they couldn't be happier.

They were all quite shocked since for years the plan was to be a paramedic.

I had always been interested in first aid. I became an Eagle Scout at the age of 16 and I think I could have earned the First Aid Merit Badge several times if that would have been allowed. After earning my Eagle I decided to be a Life Guard at Cowabunga Bay. My second season at Cowabunga I was hired back as a Lead Lifeguard and was asked several times to cover the First Aid station when needed.

I was able to use my skills at home once when my Dad passed out and I calmly took control of the situation since my Mom was in hysterics.

I knew for sure at that moment that my future would be in the medical field.

After speaking with several Paramedics, I changed my course of action. They all believed that hearing why I wanted to be in the medical field, that I should pursue being an RN instead. At first, I wasn't sure, thinking about all my female family members who are RN's. My Grandma, Aunt, and three cousins with two more cousins currently in school. Then I realized that I admire these women and what they do for our community. They inspire me! These women are amazing and I'd be honored to follow in their footsteps!
