Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Three years ago, my father was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. After the removal of his tumor, he was to endure six months of chemotherapy. The side effects due to chemotherapy had completely altered the well being of my father. Nonetheless, he finished his six-month chemotherapy treatment only to find out six months later that the cancer had metastasized to his liver. It was the first time I had ever seen my father cry after being informed of the news. I felt the pain and hopelessness in his voice and saw the fear in his eyes. He is currently in his second battle against cancer and I am standing by him the whole way along with all others affected by chronic health conditions.

The ramifications of disease processes strike feelings of fear, hopelessness, and grief into patients and family members. The reason I am here today is because I want to make a difference in the lives of others who are also feeling this type of pain and hopelessness due to a health condition of their own loved ones. My passion for nursing is driven by my empathy for those in need.

I have used the specialized set of knowledge and skills I've gained from nursing school to provide care for patients in a healthcare environment. In a particular scenario, I was called into a patient's room from a patient's family member to find that the patient was unconscious and sweating profusely. I put together a clinical picture with the healthcare team to identify that this patient had a low blood sugar. We adequately treated the patient to come out of their unconscious state. The education and knowledge I gain is more than just to get a passing grade. I am able to use what I have learned at this institution and apply it in outside situations. I am forever grateful for how I will use my education to guide me through the rest of my career as a future registered nurse.
