Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

One of the biggest factors in my life that inspired me to pursue a nursing career was my parents and their struggle with growing up in a third world country. Hearing their stories about poverty, sickness and the constant dangers of war created a heartfelt sympathy towards people, particularly children, who endure those same circumstances today. Being born in the US, I have never experienced the troubles my parents did in their home country of Liberia, but being so close to them makes those experiences all the more real to me and makes me feel obligated to do something about it. Pursuing a nursing career was a step into that goal.
Nursing wasn’t always my first career choice; my interest in that path stemmed from my strong desire to help others through philanthropy work. During high school I began researching major nonprofit organizations and became mostly interested in UNICEF, the Peace Corps and Save the Children. The values of community and global service, and child nurturing that these organizations embellished intrigued me. I was fascinated by the people who used their resources and skills to help others, devoting their time and energy into projects, building schools for children, empowering women, educating and spreading awareness on sicknesses and diseases. I became inspired to do the same.
I made the decision that one day I would devote two years of my time to the Peace Corps. In order to do that I would need to have a profession. I knew that I wanted to work with children, and I knew that I wanted to make a direct impact on the people that I worked with. Nursing happened to be the career that fit that criteria. Nursing is a very interpersonal trade which will allow me to create close relationships with the people I work with and hopefully allow me to bring comfort to people, teach them that there is more to the world than war and poverty and inspire them to do something greater for themselves, or even better, for their communities.
