Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
Nursing wasn’t always my first career choice; my interest in that path stemmed from my strong desire to help others through philanthropy work. During high school I began researching major nonprofit organizations and became mostly interested in UNICEF, the Peace Corps and Save the Children. The values of community and global service, and child nurturing that these organizations embellished intrigued me. I was fascinated by the people who used their resources and skills to help others, devoting their time and energy into projects, building schools for children, empowering women, educating and spreading awareness on sicknesses and diseases. I became inspired to do the same.
I made the decision that one day I would devote two years of my time to the Peace Corps. In order to do that I would need to have a profession. I knew that I wanted to work with children, and I knew that I wanted to make a direct impact on the people that I worked with. Nursing happened to be the career that fit that criteria. Nursing is a very interpersonal trade which will allow me to create close relationships with the people I work with and hopefully allow me to bring comfort to people, teach them that there is more to the world than war and poverty and inspire them to do something greater for themselves, or even better, for their communities.
