Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
What comes to mind when you hear the word “nurse”? For some it’s healthcare, trust, or caring. For me it’s pure joy. The privilege to see both the first and last breath a person takes is something very special, and it takes someone very special to be able to do it. It is the nurse that makes sure Tom’s coffee is just how he likes it during morning med pass. It is the nurse who calms the patient with dementia time and time again with unrelenting patience. It is the nurse who holds Mary’s hand while she gives birth to her first son. It is the nurse who helps Rose walk around her room after surgery, watching the smile form on her face as she is finally able to move easier than she has in years prior. It is the nurse who maintains the dignity of the patient being operated on, always being an advocate. It is the nurse who stays hours after her shift is over to make sure every patient receives good care while the floor is understaffed. It is the nurse who goes into the waiting room every hour to soothe the distraught wife while her husband has been in surgery for hours. It is the nurse who helps the mother distract her screaming toddler with games or funny faces while he receives a shot. It is the nurse who sacrifices her Christmas, Thanksgiving, or New Years to make sure all patients are taken care of. It is the nurse who holds your hand as your loved one takes their last breath, only showing her own emotion after the family leaves. It is the nurse who provides care with dignity in every situation. It is the nurse who takes all the verbal, and physical abuse the patient exhibits without any reaction because she knows everyone deserves good care. It is the nurse who comforts the couple who finds out they can’t get pregnant after years of unsuccessful trying. It is the nurse who is involved in all of these moments, never faltering, never showing weakness, always putting the patients and families first. It will be me, and I can’t wait.
