Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

A nursing career would allow me to continue my family’s lifestyle of servitude. My husband and I
strive to make a difference in the world. Striving to break the poverty cycle, we met as students
at LSU Shreveport. We joined a group of students to start Alpha Epsilon Delta, an honor society
for pre-health professional students, dedicated to helping the community. As a founding
member, I was honored to be apart of the initiation of several fundraising events as well as
collaborations with various non-profit organizations in Shreveport.

Later that year, my husband empathetically took custody of my younger half brother who was
being neglected, abused, and living impoverished. Then my step daughter’s mother deployed to
Iraq, so we took on two children full time and gave them stability. They accompanied me to
volunteer sessions at the Providence Home for homeless families. We played with the children
to allow the parents an hour of relief. My step daughter now volunteers with children.

In 2015 and 2016, I discovered new passions. I was sponsored to travel to Mexico to volunteer with a
plastic surgery group. Crystal Foundation of Houston travel yearly to Guerrero City, Chihuahua,
to fix cleft palates and other deformities. This is where I discovered overwhelming compassion
for the underserved. My mentor, a retired nurse anesthetist, finished over twenty trips with them
and countless others. It would be an honor to continue in her footsteps. Along with mission trips,
I have enjoyed teaching and camping with the youth at my local church for the past couple
years. I would like to continue these passions as a leader in my field, teaching others, and
hopefully inspiring others for volunteer work.
