Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
While being in high school, I was offered the opportunity to volunteer at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD). This experience allowed me not only the chance to serve others but also served as exposure to many different career opportunities in the medical field. My favorite place to volunteer at CHKD was in the neurology department. During my volunteer experience there, I was able to see what a day in the life of nurse was truly like. The nurse I was shadowing was extremely bubbly and compassionate. The way she personally interacted with the kids significantly impacted me and strengthened my desire to become a nurse. She shared an intimate story with me about how a little girl came into the hospital that was extremely ill and had no courage to continue in treatment for her headaches. The patient was young and had to stay in a dark room all day because of the severity of her pain. The nurse dedicated individual time to the patient in order to encourage her to persevere because things would get better with time. The child left after receiving botox for the third time with no headache. It was truly inspiring. Through many experiences in the hospital and various trips to the neurologist because of my brain injuries and constant migraines, the sympathy and kindness I received was remarkably touching. The way the nurses encouraged me through my difficult situation made me want to be able to help, serve, and empower others through similar hardships as well.
