Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

The summer after fourth grade my grandma was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma cancer. Our dining room turned into my grandma’s bedroom, and our summer days were spent by her side in the hospital. That was the first time I saw behind the scenes of how a hospital truly operates, and I began to consider a career path in the medical field. As I saw how compassionate and empathetic the nurses who took care of my grandma were, I began to desire a career where I could also make a difference in people's lives.

This past summer, I applied for a mentorship through Froedtert Hospital, which further confirmed my desire to become a nurse. I was one of five students from my high school chosen to experience a two-week internship shadowing a range of different professionals in the medical field. At the end of the two weeks, I felt even more confident in my decision to pursue a nursing career. I shadowed areas I found intriguing and some I decided were less suitable for my character, but one of my biggest discoveries throughout the experience was the qualities needed to be successful in the medical field.

Throughout the experience with my grandma and the Froedtert mentorship, I witnessed nothing but compassion and kindness from the health care professionals. By watching these health care professionals I learned how far kindness goes in terms of patient's’ well-being and comfort. I spend a lot of time volunteering at a nearby nursing home where I enjoy having conversations with the residents and often sing and play guitar for them. It is humbling to see how a simple and sincere conversation can have such a positive impact on the residents’ day.

My motivation to become a nurse started when I first experienced the hospital setting and has only grown stronger through my Froedtert mentorship and volunteering with nursing home patients. I believe my experiences and characteristics will allow me to be a successful nurse.
