Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

The system I work for has access to quality resources that provide the best care possible for our patients. I typically work in the emergency psychiatric area, which has ignited a desire in me to ultimately achieve a career as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. For four years I have worked in the emergency department where my passion for mental health keeps growing. Through my employment, I have witnessed people of many different backgrounds, cultures, and socioeconomic levels experience the same problems. Most people struggle in a limited or failed support system and deal with the fear of social stigma. People with mental illness often have frequent visits to the emergency department. Helping those who lack the support system to link them with all of the resources they need is what I want to do. A successful support system of family and friends should have access to many resources and information to help reduce a psychiatric emergency of their loved one. These are issues that I want to repair as a Nurse and then as a future nurse practitioner.
I deserve to win because I am a strong candidate with clear goals that I have set while working full time in healthcare. I receive a lot of help from my non-traditional support system. Without my support system, I would still be unclear with my future goals and I certainly wouldn’t be applying for scholarships. I also deserve this scholarship because I have a clear understanding of what healthcare is like based on my experience in the emergency department. I have seen first hand what healthcare means to people and what it means for the psychiatric population in my community. As a Nurse, I want to work with our psychiatric population to help bridge the gap between known and unknown resources. My ultimate goal is to pursue a career in emergency medicine. I want to focus on the emergent psychiatric patients where I will strive to give compassionate care to a typically underserved portion of the population.
