Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

My journey as a bedside critical care nurse has instilled a passion in me to educate children and their families, but as a nurse practitioner I can put families in the position to make informed decisions about their child’s health. I have always advocated for what I believe to be my patient’s best interest and do so passionately when necessary. I am particularly drawn to pediatrics for their resilient dynamic energy to keep things different and interesting and due to the fact that I believe a large portion of the job involves around education, intervention and prevention. Every parent has unanswered questions about their child’s health. They are the people who I can educate and influence by providing health maintenance, well- child examinations, developmental screening and managing common and complex health conditions.
A pediatric nurse practitioner stands to have a continuing impact on his/ her patients’ lives, and that is the kind of practitioner I want to become. It took me but a few days into the residency in pediatrics to realize these weren’t just cute chubby baby thighs, but that I was finally inspired. As health care professionals, it is our calling and duty to see that both of life transitions are as meaningful and beneficial as possible for the family and the patient. We want people to experience more moments of joy, wonder and happiness. To do that, advancing my career as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will enable me to competently and passionately educate my patients to make them more comfortable in their own skin. I will strive to become the best pediatric nurse practitioner I can be because nothing is more gratifying to me than gaining my patients’ trust and giving parents confidence to ask the right questions to get the care their child needs. Knowledge is only truly power when it is shared, and I want to put the power of education into my patients and their parents’ hands.
