Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I am dedicated to studying nursing as I truly believe it will serve as the foundation to a long and rewarding career where I will have the opportunity to help people and provide quality patient care on a daily basis. It is my goal to work in various areas of nursing, such as Pediatrics, Oncology, and Emergency/Trauma. These specialties are all areas that I feel passionate about and will provide me with a particular skill set that will allow me to serve patients well throughout my career.

For two years I worked as a Florida Highway Patrol State Trooper. In that role I regularly oversaw critical and sometimes fatal accident scenes, provided emergency medical care and was selected for an elite DUI squad where I was solely responsible for conducting traffic stops to determine impairment and make arrests of intoxicated individuals. I feel as though this service provides a rare breadth of experiences that has helped prepare me for a nursing career.

But, my second experience was even more shaping. My son was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer (Rhabdoid tumor) six weeks after his birth. It was my experience as his primary caretaker during treatments and subsequent years of recovery where I became acclimated with chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation, central lines, feeding tubes, therapies, etc. Thankfully, he is now doing great and he, along with his incredible nurses, motivated me to make this life change. My son was fortunate to have smart, hardworking, compassionate nurses that had a positive impact on both my son's medical treatment and my family's experience being in a hospital for months. They saved his life numerous times and for that I am forever grateful. I have chosen to pursue a nursing degree to be able to help others the way my son and family were helped when we needed it the most.

Receiving this scholarship will bring me one step closer to completing my education and providing quality care for people while working as a nurse.
