Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
I started freshman year of college on the Psychology pathway. Through a service-learning project for my Leadership course, I started working with Planned Parenthood to address sexual stigmas and the lack of reproductive health education amongst the underage community. These issues led to unwanted pregnancies and increasing rates of sexually transmitted disease infection rates. After finishing that specific project, I continued growing throughout the organization through volunteering opportunities and was invited to the 2019 Lobby Days at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee to meet with State Representatives and Senators and advocate for bills which reinforce reproductive rights. I even had the opportunity to speak in Judiciary Committee against the Parental Consent bill. Coming back down to Miami, where I lived, I reflected on this newfound, brewing passion. Universal healthcare is one of the most important rights every individual should have access to. I wanted to keep working with this issue taking it one step further. I wanted to be the person on the other end, providing the services. That is why I chose to change to Nursing and pursue a pre-med track. Learning to care for patients is one of the pillars an aspiring-doctor should possess when learning to treat patients. It makes for a more empathetic and well-rounded professional.
