Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I am the first generation in my family to go to college and child of an immigrant family. I received my citizenship in 2016, and that was one of the happiest days of my life. Seeing my family struggle, made me realize I do not want to be a part of that lifestyle. Not those type of struggles at least. I don’t want my life history to be a statistic, as in a child of an immigrant family who could not succeed. I see for my future a successful career that allows for security in my life, and the education to help others along the way. Nursing provides all of this. I want to help people who are at their most vulnerable moments, who for many may be having the worst day of their life. Having been in that situation myself, I know I can approach patients in a compassionate way.
I’ve seen people firsthand refuse to go to the hospital because they are afraid of their undocumented status and deportation. This fear is so great they rather be in pain than risk putting themselves or family members in risk of deportation. Even so once at the hospital they have so much fear it’s hard for them to open up. Acknowledging this as a nurse gives you can opportunity to extend a hand of comfort, give resources to help calm their concerns.
With nursing you must be steps ahead in order to properly assess patients and prevent them from skyrocketing down. Nurses are usually the first to see when symptoms of disease exacerbation are occurring or complications, nurses must act quickly, be organized and record everything with attention to detail. This type of investigative work is fascinating and never boring. I find most satisfaction in life when helping others. Its the caring nature of nursing that is universal, no matter the culture, ethnicity or race that inspires me to become a nurse. I've seen this and want to be a part of that impact, to make someones day just a bit better in anyway I can. Watching nurses with direct patient care and proper bedside manners inspire me to become an RN.
