Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Being an only child of immigrant parents, I will be the first in my family to pursue higher education. My parents never got the chance to finish grade school back in Vietnam, because they either had to work labor jobs to afford the cost of living or preoccupied with the terrible war. Due to the tragedies and sacrifices, my parents have made, and the hardships they’ve endured at an early age, they’ve inspired me to be as hard-working as them and work for what I want in life because I have the choice and opportunities they didn’t.
I have a passion for helping and caring for others because it gives me a sense of purpose. For example, I would find myself being involved in 3 volunteering events in one day because I love to be productive and help others in the community. Although it may be hard work sometimes, it’s worth it to see an impact I’ve made. My cousin, who is now a registered nurse, has inspired me the most to go into the nursing field. I’m currently working on getting to know the inner workings of a hospital by volunteering at my local Providence medical center. I find it so motivating being in the hospital setting and knowing that I could be those nurses I see in the halls. I was in between many career paths including healthcare administration, optometry, and even pharmacy. However, none of these fields satisfied what I was looking for. I wanted to spend time with people and get to know them while helping them feel better.
I chose to pursue nursing because a couple of decades from now, the world will still need the compassion and care of a nurse. I believe that nurses will never go out of style because they play a pertinent role in the healthcare system. That is why I’ve simply decided that nursing is what I want to dedicate my life to.
