Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Sometimes, the best part of life is the unexpected. “Don’t leave the miracle before it happens,” is a quote that plays an important role in my life. Going on 'Midnight Run’s' with my Campus Ministry organization at school helped me recognize the need for hard working and passionate individuals in the healthcare field. During these "Run's", a group of students and I would give out bagged lunches we freshly made, hot soup, and/or donated clothes to some of the homeless men and women in concentrated areas of the city. I noticed that there was an extreme need for medical attention throughout this community, but I often found myself asking, “How did they get here?” This underserved community is often forgotten about along with their rights to basic care. The quote I mentioned about miracles was told to me by a man who used to be homeless and received help from the LA Catholic Worker, an organization I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He now advocates for homeless individuals by sharing his story and giving back to that community. I am a firm believer that a lesson can be learned from any experience, whether it be mine or someone else's. As a nurse, I will do my best to fulfill the needs of my patients by always advocating for their health and listening to their concerns or life stories. I’ve had irreplaceable experiences throughout my volunteer work solely due to the courage and friendliness from the individuals that I’ve supported. My family continues that drive because as I’ve seen in my community, healthcare goes beyond the doctor’s office and the hospital. It starts in the home with communication and knowledge about your own health. It incorporates the person as a whole, their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Becoming a nurse, grants me the privilege and expertise to pass my knowledge down to my family and friends so they can achieve greatness in their lives as well.
