Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I am the only daughter from a single mother of two children born in America. My parents along with my older brother were born and raised in Nigeria. My mother who is a registered nurse and a foster parent, taught me the importance of empathy. Through my mother’s teachings I envisioned the type of person I wanted to be. I wanted to be the person to care for others despite the challenges. In fact, my challenges have fueled me to pursue a career in health care. However, it wasn’t until my senior year of college that I considered nursing.
After graduating college, I applied and gained acceptance into an accelerated nursing program in Lawton, Oklahoma. While in nursing school, I’ve learned that nurses have the opportunity to be a leader within the community, advocate and educate patients about their current health status and administer medications to help promote effective treatment. Likewise, I admire the challenges and positions this field offers and as a future nurse, my goal is to implement evidence based practice in my career. Evidence based practice in nursing requires problem solving and and it improves patient care outcomes. Modalities for treatments is drastically changing each year in the health care field and I want to engage in research by solving some of the complex issues in the health field and develop new approaches to treat diseases/conditions. I plan to extend my education by participating in a residency program or earning my masters after nursing school. Being a nurse who is knowledgeable will give my patients a sense of comfortability and trust to know their needs will be met. in addition, nursing is a unique, life changing and rewarding career. My goal is to serve others, impact lives, and care for people who are in need despite of the challenges that come along the way.
