Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I am a very caring person, one who cares more about others than herself. Before I became a nursing major, I was in the liberal arts transfer program at my local technical college and thinking of transferring into social work but in my first semester I took a college success class where I had to do a current events presentation. My current events presentation was about Kira Johnson and African American women who die from postpartum hemorrhaging after a C-section. Kira Johnson died from postpartum hemorrhaging after a C-section in 2016 after her and her husband's concerns were being ignored for over ten hours. Being African American and seeing that African American women have a higher rate of postpartum hemorrhaging became an eye opener for me. My aunt is a physician's assistant, and my grandmother was an LPN for over twenty years, I have some family history in the medical field but until I came upon this problem; I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. The story of Kira was the only story I could find at the time but it's why I decided nursing is what I want to do. I decided that one day I would like to change statics such as this one and in every way I can change the healthcare system for the better by introducing my encouraging, selfless personality.
