Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
I was only three when my maternal grandfather passed away. I don’t remember much about him besides he was loving and would always share his chips with me. He passed away from kidney failure and bed sores. Then when I was about eight, my paternal grandfather passed away. I remember him a lot more since I was older. My pop pop was very loving, caring and a jokester. With the two important men in my life passing away, I wanted to learn more about kidney disease, heart disease and other health issues. My maternal grandmother is a retired registered nurse and a ten-year breast cancer survivor. I remember after her chemo treatments, my mom and I would visit her. She would be so ill at times. One time I recall her not eating and really depressed. I went to her bedside in a very humble way and said to her… “Nana, I am your granddaughter and I want to see you live many many more years. You can’t live if you don’t eat.” Needless to say, she cried, but she ate. Nana and I are always talking about health. I find myself calling her from time to time asking her health questions. She is always eager to answer my questions. I believe it is in my bloodline and my passion to become a nurse. I would say the single biggest motivating factor that drives me to pursue a career in nursing is because I want to help people (in particular children) and most importantly my family with their health.
