Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.
The biggest inspiration that made me want to pursue nursing was my beautiful mother. Growing up she always told me how she wanted me to become something more and something better. Her childhood was difficult from losing her mother at a young age, to having to work starting from the age of 8, cleaning was her job her whole life. She did not have the opportunity to go to school, growing up in a small town of Guatemala, Asuncion Mita, she had to help provide for her siblings. Her story was so inspiring, and I knew I wanted to become something more, help people specifically, I did not know what I would want to become but I would eventually find out in the late year of 2012. It was the hardest news that I had ever been told, around November she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She was told she would have less than half a year to live. Throughout those six months I felt so helpless, no treatments were working, she wasn’t getting better, she was losing weight rapidly and the worst part was she was in California meanwhile my father brother and I were in Arizona. 6 months later My mother, Rosa, passed away at the age of 51 on April 11, 2013. I lost my biggest inspiration battling pancreatic cancer at the young age of 11. I remember the days following were extremely hard for my father, brother and myself. I knew right away that I wanted to become a nurse, and more specifically specialize in oncology. I remember the pain my heart felt when I got the news, and I never want anyone, especially at the young age I was, I don’t want any parent or child to feel that heartbreak. I want to help people with cancer and allow them to get better and hopefully find a good treatment or even cure to cancer. Being able to study nursing so far has been so amazing and I love it, I just finished my first year of college a few weeks back. I hope I am able to make my mother proud of everything I am doing, I hope I am able to accomplish all my goals and help other that are in need.
