Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

Nursing is in my blood. But it’s taken me becoming a mother to realize it’s my calling in life. As a mother of three, I struggled with all of the prenatal and postpartum aspects of motherhood. From issues with gestational diabetes in pregnancy, to latch issues in breastfeeding in my postpartum stage. It was with my third and last baby, that I knew I wanted to help other Moms who were struggling with some of the same things I have struggled with.
As I sat and nursed my week old infant, tears streaming down my face, I knew I had to help others. I’ve always been a helper; a nurturer. My baby was having trouble with his latch and I didn’t know where to turn. I knew I couldn’t be the only mom who had this crippling fear of failing her child. I researched and pressed on, overcoming each obstacle. I can’t help but look back on that trying time, and be sad for myself for not having anywhere to turn.
Within the first few weeks of his life, I made the decision to become a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor with a local agency. My job there has made it clear, that nursing is where I’m meant to be. A nursing degree will be the first step to me obtaining my International Breastfeeding Coalition Lactation Consultant degree so I can help those moms like me. Being a mom of three boys, a financial scholarship will help me with paying for the college that I’ve enrolled in. And it will help me get one step closer to helping each future and current Mom, that I can.
