Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I chose nursing as my career because I enjoy providing the type of care that is required of a nurse day to day. I grew up with six little siblings so I am used to being a constant source of care in their lives and I grew to be a naturally nurturing person who puts the other first. I have the type of personality that tries to intuitively recognize other’s needs and do what I can to make their lives easier. I have been able to do this through my job as a CNA caring for the elderly who can no longer live independently.
I have many fond memories of nurses in various situations where either I or a family member has needed care. I had open-heart surgery when I was almost three years old and many of my first memories are from that hospital stay. I don’t remember many specific situations but I remember that I felt safe and cared for and that is what lasted. I also have positive experiences with the nurses who worked in the NICU while my younger siblings were there. Their presence and interactions were reassuring and made a big impact on my perception of the situations I experienced as my family juggled having a baby in the NICU as well as older children who needed to be cared for. The nurses made me a part of my sibling’s lives when I felt distanced by the formality of hospitals and I want to do the same for others.
It is also very important to me that I graduate with a degree that allows for a variety of job opportunities as well as opportunities for further education. I feel certain that I will find a job that I enjoy with this degree and training -even if my specific interests change. There are many facets of nursing to explore and I like the variety of options that are available when it comes time for a job or further education.
