Write an essay where you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a nursing degree.

I was raised in Montana Vista, a small, unincorporated community in the outskirts of El Paso, Texas. I am the youngest of three. My mother is an elementary school teacher and my father is a truck driver. Growing up, I was taught that family always comes first and that education is a privilege. Inevitably, my aspirations were to always make my family proud and to follow my sisters’ footsteps. However, as I have developed my own walk of faith and began questioning my purpose, I’ve been challenged with the questions, “What will my legacy be? How will my life serve for the greater purpose of others?” These questions have launched me in the search for a profession where I can not only make my family proud, but ultimately make a meaningful difference in the world. A profession as a nurse has become my knitting between ambition and purpose. Nursing is a gateway to care for others in their most dire times regardless of socioeconomic class, race, or beliefs. The impact of a nurse extends beyond the local and national levels, carrying the power to extend aid to the most vulnerable communities across the third world. As a pre-nursing student, I aspire to attain a BSN from the University of Texas at Arlington. As a nurse, I aspire to serve at the local level and develop into a skilled professional with the ability to mentor and lead in some of the most underprivileged areas around the world. Nursing is the bridge between my ambitions and the legacy I aspire to leave behind; the opportunity to compassionately serve others through medicine.
