Repetition. Repetition. Repetition. Did I make my point clear? The test preparation strategy that works bets for me is undoubtedly repetition. Prior to exams and quizzes, my typical study session consists of reviewing definitions, applying formulas, and rewriting my notes – over and over again. I know that repetition is not for everyone; most of my friends roll their eyes when I pull out a deck of flashcards at the end of a meal or on our way to class for the umpteenth time that week. However, it is the most effective method for me personally to retain and understand information. I believe that repetition is the best way for me to study because patience is not my strong suit. I prefer to perform tasks quickly, almost to a fault. Yet, repetition gives me the ability to breeze through material at my own pace, knowing that if something falls through the cracks on my first go-around, I will be able to pick it up by my fourth or fifth. Even though it is a time-consuming practice, repetition gives me a sense of confidence that has become essential to my academic success. For example, if I can work out a problem once, there is no way for me to be sure that I can replicate the procedure accurately when it counts. By doing specific types of questions multiple times, I am reassured that I can put my work into action, since I have practiced numerous times before. There is no worse feeling than going into an exam with uncertainty, so I choose to combat that doubt by building up my confidence beforehand with as many repetitions as I need in order to feel content. Intense repetition is not only my preferred method to absorb information, but it is my personal way of reassuring myself and my abilities. Watching a problem become less foreign and intimidating as I go through countless iterations of studying is truly an unmatched feeling. Knowing that I am capable of making material transform from scary to simple is satisfaction that I only gain through repetition.
