Tell us a little bit about yourself and your plans for college.

My name is Ahmaiya, but I go by Maiya, I'm currently a senior in high school. I have played basketball all four years of my high school career, and would love to further my basketball career on the next level. As a student-athlete, I take my academics very seriously, I currently have over a 4.0 GPA. My goal is to major in dermatology and minor in sports medicine. I found out about dermatology my sophomore year, I have always enjoyed skincare and skin related things, but at the same time I wanted to be a doctor, which is then when I was introduced to dermatology. At the end of my sophomore year I was playing a pick up game with the boys at our school and ended up spraining my ankle, and it was quite serious, and ever since that that following year I have sprained my ankle numerous times after that. So, going into my junior year I decided to take anatomy and physiology and I started learning about the body and my teacher helped my find a new interest, being someone who has been injured before I fell in love with sports medicine. Thinking about this field, I knew I would have a lot of passion for it, because I knew how it felt when I hurt my ankle so I wanted to help treat others who I knew I could relate to, knowing I have gone through that.
