Write an essay where you tell us what test preparation practices work best for you and why.
Success isn’t just about what you want to accomplish in life, it’s about what you inspire others to do. My peers have inspired me to continue to strive for success by creating study groups. These study groups were an excellent way for me to review in preparation for an exam. I find that my peers can help me improve my notes and fully understand certain concepts. It is important that everyone in your study group is in the study mindset to avoid distractions. I use my notes, homework, and old tests to help guide me through the material. My peers would share the information that they thought was important from their notes. We study for about an hour or two and take a couple small breaks in between. After studying in a group, I take a long break and then review the material again on my own to see what I had retained. I also found that it helps to not look at my study guide one more time trying to remember everything for class in five minutes.
Another tool that has helped me prepare for tests, is to take notes during lecture and rewriting them in my own time. I write down key words from lecture and then use my textbooks or my computer to understand its meaning when rewriting. For math tests, I write down formulas and equations first so that I don’t forget them as I work through the problems. When remembering vocabulary, I’ll look for keywords. Sometimes you can find the answer in another question. Other tips that have helped me is going to bed early (but not oversleeping) and eating breakfast. Whether I am studying or taking the test, I make sure to pace myself. When I am taking a test, I like to finish all the questions on a page before filling in my bubble sheet. If I don’t know the answer, I don’t beat myself up over it, I just guess and move on. It also important to keep in mind that not every test is the same. I am always adjusting my testing strategies according to the type and subject of the test that I am taking. My road to success is always under construction.
